THE TROVE

Essays. Stories. Rabbit Trails.

In The Trove I follow the knowing that brought me here—from belonging, becoming, and bearing what we know to the question at the heart of it all: What becomes possible when we stop trying to know better and begin knowing together?

I’m working on Root to Fruit conversations that make the end of our Should Know Better Conflicts easy as said and done.

There will always be things we do not know.

But wanting to know is our North Star.

When we know together, we do better.

STAY IN THE KNOW

THE FOUR
KNOWING
ESSAY SERIES

We are born to know. These four essays follow that knowing from root to fruit—belonging, becoming, and bearing the life and dreams we came to build together. Knowing is what happens when human curiosity becomes creation itself: the ability to be fecund—to create abundance with what we know and raise others up in their knowing. When we know together, we do better.

INTRODUCTION

SHOULD KNOW BETTER CRISIS

Our beginnings are as unique as fingerprints, but we are born into a world that tells us we belong to something much larger than ourselves through its ecological, biological, and physiological nature.

For years, babies’ needs are cared for without words. This builds trust that they belong to a world that cares about them.

As adults, when someone should have known better than to do or say something that makes us doubt they care, our bodies react with the same misery a baby feels. We recognize misery but never learn to recognize the need beneath it or to express it.

Somewhere along the way, not knowing how to express our needs or what we need to know together to meet them became associated with embarrassment, neediness, vulnerability, or shame. Instead, we learned to lead with those feelings.

Feelings are not needs.

Different words create different worlds.
